The Cecchetti Method of Ballet Instruction Helps Dancers in Albany
At Redemption Dance Institute, our Albany dance teachers use a time-tested method of ballet instruction called the Cecchetti method. This formal and rigorous program was developed by a ballet master named Enrico Cecchetti. It has become the standard method of universal ballet learning, which before his curriculum was more haphazard and dependent on the style of the instructor. Through this method, our highly skilled educators can help dancers of all skill levels improve their skills and craft.
Who Was Enrico Cecchetti
Enrico Cecchetti was born in Rome in the dressing room of a theater in 1850. He first appeared on stage as an infant in his fathers arms. During his youth, he was trained by some of the top ballet masters, many of whom were trained by Carlo Blasis, who developed the first codified ballet teaching method. These influences all played a role in Cecchetti’s development of his own ballet theory.
Widely considered one of the best male dancers of his time, Cecchetti captivated audiences with multiple pirouettes, stellar leaps, and brilliant batterie. He was so skillful that he created and performed the virtuoso role of the Blue Bird and the mime role of Carabosse in the premiere of Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty in 1890.
Where Cecchetti really stands out is as a ballet instructor. He taught at the Imperial School in St. Petersburg and the Warsaw State School in Poland. For a time, he exclusively trained Anna Pavlova until the ballet community pleaded with him to resume teaching more widely. He eventually trained and performed with the Ballets Russes across the globe. At the height of his instruction career, it was said that no one could become a finished dancer without his training.
The Theory of the Cecchetti Method
What differentiates the Cecchetti Method from other means of ballet instruction is its focus on the self-awareness of the dancer. In the past, learning ballet was a routine of master to student displays and imitation. In contrast, the Cecchetti method focuses on the laws of anatomy, helping the dancer recognize how his or her body is performing so as to make improvements. This helps develop all of the essential qualities of a dancer including balance, poise, strength, and elasticity.
